Investigating the biological actions of molecules "in vitro" on cultured cells is a fundamental step for drugs development and for basic research in life sciences.

Most biologically active molecules, including for example a number of candidate drugs and genetic constructs, act at the cell interior and must be delivered into the cell across the natural barrier represented by the cell membrane.

Routine techniques of intracellular delivery are high-cost and time-consuming procedures involving the use of a large amount of the candidate molecule and a stochastic interpretation of the results.

Thanks to an innovative combination of cell and molecular biology with semiconductor technology we developed a new technique overcoming these limitations.

The key advancement is the possibility to easily perform intracellular delivery of molecules selectively into single cells and with high efficiency , transforming "in vitro" testing into a deterministic process, allowing low-cost and high-throughput molecular screenings and novel experimental approaches.
